- As a Toaster user since version 2.0, I think this upgrade price stinks.
- As an SA user NewTek offered me a very good upgrade price of about $150.
- Why the huge disparity? We have upgraded our Toaster (and therefore LW)
- software at every opportunity and are now offered this lousy deal. $695!!
- We only had the SA software for a couple months and the combined cost of
- SA and the upgrade was less than this "special" deal. I guess being a
- regular NewTek LW customer counts for exactly the same thing as being a
- competitor's customer. Isn't that "special?" NewTek may be excited. I'm
- not.
-
- Yes, I realize that LW at $995 is a good deal and of course I think LW
- is a great package. But this upgrade price is WAY too close to regular
- retail. We have already purchased LW. This is too much like having to re-
- purchase the software from scratch. Typically, software upgrades cost
- less than 50% of the standard package price. I'm looking at a Dec. '94
- Computer Shopper and see AutoCad Release 13 MSRP (not an ad) of $495 for
- an upgrade for users of release 12. I'm pretty sure that a new AutoCad
- package costs more than 1000 (around $2000 I think). An ad in the same
- mag shows Photoshop 3.0 at $549 and $144 for the upgrade.
-
- It isn't my imagination and this isn't an off-the-wall complaint about
- how software in general is overpriced. Upgrading just shouldn't cost
- nearly the same as buying new. Most software publishers seem to agree
- with this. There is new stuff in 4.0 but not THAT much new stuff. If
- 4.0 is "worth" $995, there isn't $695 "worth" of new stuff. In other
- words, the package is no where near 70% changed!! This upgrade price
- might make sense for a cross-platform "upgrade", but it is too high for a
- same-platform upgrade.
-
- Clearly NewTek is MUCH more concerned with expanding its LW market than
- treating its current LW users reasonably. I wonder what the next
- upgrade is gonna cost me? No-doubt we will purchase this upgrade since LW
- is our program of choice (proving that in a purely economic sense that the
- upgrade IS "worth" $695 to us). However, my personal attitude toward
- NewTek just soured quite a bit. I doubt if I will be alone. Hmmm - I can
- get 3DS for around $700 at student pricing (I'm also a full time student
- and should be doing my statistics homework right now) and maybe they will
- drop their regular prices in the face of NewTek's competition and bundle
- some plug-ins. Yep - don't even worry about customer loyalty NewTek.
-
- BTW - its a real pisser when you consider that $695 doesn't even include
- upgraded Toaster software!
